Exquisite 1940s Ladies Writing Bureau (hw643)
This beautiful petite ladies writing desk is a simply stunning piece of authentic vintage furniture. It was made in the 1940s and is a copy of an 18th century bureau. The gentle Queen Anne styling, the wonderfully warm colours and the delightful attention to detail throughout this piece combine to make it a true thing of beauty. Being fully lockable and with a discreet hide-away compartment too - this perfect little bureau must surely be the ultimate way to keep all your personal and private things safe yet close to hand...
The bureau is painted a warm and sweet honey tone with soft green edging and gold borders. Pretty roses and foxgloves adorn the top, with dainty little roses scattered elsewhere. The faux crackle-effect finish is completely handpainted too; what superb work! The bureau has its original key and opens out to lay securely upon two supports which pull out from the front of the bureau by two metal handles. Inside, there is a veritable array of delights! There are three shaped drawers, each with metal handles and the same handpainted finish. There are 'pigeon holes' for keeping cards, envelopes and paper in order, and a 'secret compartment' - a sliding door with a painted fern upon it reveals an area where one might hide love letters and the like! The area for writing has more pretty roses painted upon it. The graceful, curving legs allow ample room for a full sized chair to be placed under the bureau. The bureau is painted on all sides ensuring it is beautiful to look at wherever positioned.
A superb item of furniture for the connoisseur of special pieces - and the serious letter writer! The 18th century original would be many thousands of pounds to buy and this wonderful 1940s bureau would also have graced a grand house in its day.
The bureau measures approximately 37" high by 22.5" at its widest and 18.5" at its deepest. It has age-related wear and markings, but these are minimal. The honey tone has most probably deepened over the decades but this adds to its authentic beauty. The bureau is in two parts with the top seating nicely into the frame of the legs.
