Stunning 19thC French Floral Cretonne Panels (tx229)
This is an absolutely beautiful pair of French panels! Dating to the 19th century, they are made from cretonne, a wonderfully heavyweight and textured fabric. The deep azure blue background with its decorative pattern of paler blue acanthus leaves is quite stunning. Atop these delightful background, are clusters of pretty deep rose-pink roses and hydrangeas; magnifique!
There are two panels but they are not a pair - although with minor adjustment they could be made into a pair of curtains. There are large, old curtain rings sewn into the top of each panel which I will leave if required, otherwise I am happy to remove them.
One panel measures approximately 65" across the bottom and is 92" long. It is unlined. It is slightly gathered across the top into pleats and the rings have been sewn on at these pleats. It measures 36" across at the top. It has a vertical join down the centre and a 83" down, there is a piece joined across the width, which gives the full length of 92". There is some subtle fading here and there to the floral clusters, but none to the deep blue and pale blue background. I would say it has age discolouration in places, but this does not detract - I imagine a good soak would help with this.
The second panel measures approximately 53" across the bottom and is 89" long. It is lined. I do believe the fabric on this panel has been used upside down, although it is not something that jumps out at you. It is slightly gathered across the top into pleats and the rings have been sewn on at these pleats. It measures 44" across at the top. It has a vertical join down the centre, and is made up of a further few, smaller, but sizeable pieces near the edge. The lining has considerable age-discolouration and there is subtle fading here and there to the floral clusters, although the blues remain strong. I noted a small spot of wear near an edge and one small repair near the bottom edge. There is age discolouration in places, but this does not detract - I imagine a good soak would help with this.
These magnificent French panels are a fine example of 19th century textiles and will add immense beauty to you home. They could be easily made into a pair of curtains or used as single door curtains. Alternatively, there is a wonderful amount of fabric here for some pretty French projects!
